  Greetings from Creswell
Posted by: k7kra - 01-11-2012, 03:26 AM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (1)

I would like to say hello to the group from my QTH on the western edge of Creswell. I was finally able to dig my radio out of the garage where it had been languishing since our move back in July. I found the 145.13 repeater after scanning the band, and finding it to be one of the few repeaters with activity. I am currently running an Alinco DR-110T with a twin-lead j-pole antenna.

If anybody is interested or has done this let me know I have actually found a lot of links on what to do. I have made a couple of ground contacts Through the ISS Digipeater also have had my position reported to an IGate that has a map on the web that showed my position for that pass. Done it all with a vertical. The link to the map is
http://www.ariss.net/

My next little project is to make a crew contact on voice if anybody has done this feel free to point me in the right direction.

  Antenna mast?
Posted by: w0ulf - 01-08-2012, 08:24 PM - Forum: Antennas - Replies (8)

Alright... REALLY dumb question here.

I've used a lot of cheap and stupid things for antenna mast over the years. I've even stooped so low as to buy TV antenna mast from Radio Shack.

What does everyone else use for mast, and where do they get it?

Trees don't count. I don't have any suitable trees in my yard for use as a mast right now, and I don't have time to grow one. Tongue

I'd like to mount it off the eaves, if possible. That way, I can keep my antennas on the back of the house where they are "low visibility".

  Dual band satellite antenna
Posted by: K7VNZ - 01-07-2012, 07:23 PM - Forum: Wanted - Replies (2)

Still really new to amateur radio, and got into it mainly because I've always wanted to work a satellite with a HT. Looking for something similar to this Arrow II Satellite antenna

Let me know if you have something you would be willing to sell, or have ever made a satellite contact and maybe have any other antenna suggestions. OR, your general experience with Arrow antennas in particular.

Thanks!

  User titles & ranks
Posted by: Administrator - 01-07-2012, 12:44 PM - Forum: News & Announcements - Replies (8)

Due to the conflicts with user tags and ranks, I have now allowed any member to change their custom title to anything they wish.

Simply logon the forums. Click on the settings tab on top of page. Then click on edit profile and you should see a field that says custom user title.

Now you can put anything you wish.

Enjoy!

Question related to: Oregon's Mobile Communication Device" Law.
Posted by: W7RTM - 01-02-2012, 05:27 PM - Forum: General Discussion - Replies (5)

Although ORS 811.507 is principally concerned with cell phone use and texting. Car pooling from Philomath to Salem 4 days a week I've seen plenty of reason for this rule. As I read the law it would directly apply to mobile amateur radio use.

With that in mind I bought a headset with boom mike for my HT. Being a novice I'm still doing a lot of reading. I just came across an article stating that headsets are illegal in some states. I can't find if that is the case for Oregon.

My headset is VOX capable, but I'd be concerned about keying the repeater with ambient noise. What are the options for mobile operations if that's the case.

Thanks Ted

  New 146.980 Link
Posted by: W7RMG - 01-02-2012, 02:07 PM - Forum: 513 Repeater System - Replies (1)

I'd like to personally thank Chris K7TVL for linking the 6.98 repeater, which is located on the KGW Tower in Portland, up to the 5.13 repeater system. Where I live in Salem I have a rather large hill to the south of my home QTH and listening to/hitting the 513 is rather annoying with all the phase distortion that occurs depending on weather conditions.

With this new link, participating in the 513 activities is far more easier and enjoyable than ever before, for not only myself of course, but I'm sure for others who may reside in the Greater Portland area.

I have noticed that the 6.98 doesn't seem to have that strong of a signal compared to other repeaters in the same area. In fact, when I'm mobile in Salem, the 5.13 has a much stronger signal than the 6.98. I don't know the real reason for this but maybe there is a legitamite reason for it.

Oh well, I'm just happy for the better access the to the 5.13 system. Thanks Chris.
