Slovakia to send its first ever satellite into space
Posted by: News Man - 11-30-2017, 08:19 PM - Forum: Amateur News - No Replies

Slovakia is gearing up to launch its first satellite to orbit with the aim of demonstrating the country’s ability to carry out scientific experiments in space. The pocket-sized one-unit CubeSat, named skCUBE, is currently slated for liftoff in June atop SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The central European state is one of the last countries on the continent to have its own satellite.

Weighing about 2.2 lbs. (1 kg), skCUBE is a 4-inch (10-centimeter) cube that will carry an onboard computer, a communications system, and a small camera to conduct experiments when orbiting Earth. The main goal of this project is to demonstrate that Slovakia is capable of doing highly sophisticated space research.

Pirates in Space: Berea students reach for the stars with experiment
Posted by: News Man - 11-29-2017, 09:22 AM - Forum: Amateur News - No Replies

Joshua Woodward's ninth-grade honors integrated science class at Berea Community High School looks more akin to a NASA control room these days rather than a high school science lab thanks to a class project that will have the student's — literally — reaching for the stars.

According to Woodward, the class has spent the entire spring semester designing a project to launch experiments to near space (approximately 120,000 feet) using a high altitude weather balloon. The class is planning the mission, constructing the payload and launch system, running the on-board experiments, and even using the project to learn about force and motion.

Kudos times two! I recently attended a class (March 19 and 20) called AUXCOMM, hosted and funded by Yuma County OEM’s AZ State Homeland Security Grant Program and instructors and registration was provided by DEMA-Department of Emergency and Military Affairs.
The Yuma Auxiliary Communication Service (YACS) HAM organization was instrumental in assisting the Emergency Manager in getting this class in Yuma.

Posted by: News Man - 11-28-2017, 05:51 PM - Forum: Amateur News - No Replies

World Amateur Radio Day (WARD), observed every April 18, marks the founding of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) in 1925. As they do every year, radio amateurs worldwide will take to the airwaves to celebrate Amateur Radio’s contribution to society.

“April 18 is the day for all of Amateur Radio to celebrate and tell the world about the science we can help teach, the community service we can provide, and the fun we have,” the IARU said in announcing World Amateur Radio Day 2016. “We hope you will join in the fun and education that is World Amateur Radio Day!”
