how do you ID with a dead battery?
#1
We all know about the FCC requirement to ID every 10 minutes of a conversation and on the last transmission.

What happens if you are on an HT and your only battery dies? You have no other way to transmit... and you didn't ID on your last transmission?

Just curious as to what people thought about that. Obviously there will be times where that will happen. I don't recall there being any slack in the FCC requirement.

Guess there's not much one can do.

I've had that happen and had the other person I've been talking to lose a battery. I will ID for them usually when I sign such as "that was K7??? with a dead battery And this is K7UND"

I don't think you can actually ID for someone else. The whole idea of an individual ID'ing both stations at the end of a conversation is flawed IMHO. At least that is my understanding. I suppose it's better than nothing. However I don't think it fulfills the legal requirement.

No, you are correct. It does not fulfill the legal requirement. But as a courtesy that is what I do to at least make listeners aware their battery died etc.

That is a good idea.

In my case I will typically have a fully-charged spare battery on hand. But I'm planning on using my HT as a mobile rig. And swapping batteries is something I won't be able to do while driving.

Just another tip.....
they make battery eliminators for pretty much EVERY newer handheld made. Some of the more expensive "big 3" HTs that don't, at least have a power input on the radio.

I have one for each of my KG-UV3Ds. Haven't got one for my UV8D yet, but plan to.

Just another option.
