Field Day 2012
#1
Hi Everyone,

Thought I'd start a new thread for the purposes of Field Day coordination. If you have anything to share about this year's Field Day, here's the place.

Bill,

Sounds great!

What would you like us to put here? I'm really looking forward to Field Day. I'm trying to decide how much I want to jump in to this. My heart is saying "Jump in with both feet" and my wallet is saying "She cannna take much more o' this, cap'n"!

Right now, I think my heart is telling my wallet to "Suck it up, you're only a few months from paying off your truck loan and then you can cover what you're taking out of the rainy day jar". :^)

I'm really excited!

Hi Bill
I have some photos posted of my homebrew tower. I have most of the stuff bought and mostly the reaminder is final fabrication, assembly and testing at Ted's.
I also tested the 3 Kw generator and changed out the gas for good stabilized stuff. Other then that I just need to pull out my list of stuff I can bring and thin it down to what I should bring.

Cheers!

Yes Cyrel,

By all means list what you can bring to the table. I've been swamped since the meeting. Will try and arrange a time for a site survey and let you know.

Here's my list of things I CAN bring to Field Day. If I don't want to use it and no one else asks me to bring it, don't expect to see it there - it may or may not come. In other words - if you want to see it there, speak up and let me know!

Power:
  • 12kW Gasoline generator (120/240VAC welder/generator)
  • 5.5kW Gasoline generator (120/240VAC generator)
  • 1500 watt modified sine wave inverter (120VAC)
  • 35 Amp 12VDC base station power supply
  • Various 12VDC batteries (Both gel, AGM, and automotive starting) - 55Ah and up
  • 2A/15A/40A lead-acid/gel/AGM/Deep Cycle 12VDC battery charger
  • Assorted extension cords, surge protectors, line conditioners, outdoor circuit breaker panels, and other AC Mains distribution gear
  • A small assortment of 12VDC distribution gear (With various types of connectors on it)

Radios / Tuners:
  • Icom IC-7410 HF/50MHz transceiver
  • Icom AH-4 autotuner
  • Numerous VHF / UHF mobile and portable transceivers

Antennas:
  • Double G5RV (204' across!) with PL259 at the end of the coax feed line
  • Numerous 2m / 70cm antennas, 2m, and 6m antennas (J-poles, quarter wave verticals, and a 7 element 2m beam with adapters to convert them all to PL-259 or SMA for use with HTs, mobiles, or base stations)
  • Several 2m / 70cm NMO-mount mobile antennas
  • One 2m 5/8 wave mag-mount

Other radio gear:
  • A small selection of coax (A 100', 50', and 25' length of LMR-400, some very short pieces of RG-8/U and RG-58)
  • Three PL-259 to SMA pigtails to connect SMA HTs to coax with PL-259 ends
  • VHF/UHF and HF SWR meters (One each)
  • 90 watt 2m brick-type amplifier (Untested - I have no clue if it even works)

Computer gear:
  • Lots of computers (Several laptops, ooodles of PCs, but no flat screen monitors) capable of running Ham Radio Deluxe, Digipan, and other Windows apps for digital modes and logging. This includes networking equipment, etc.

Camping gear:
  • About enough for me, myself, and I. Four person dome tent, 10x10 canopy, sleeping bag, a camping chair, a propane lantern, and a single-burner white gas camping stove. Sadly, I do not have any rain flys, multi-burner stoves, or extra chairs, etc. No family means no need for gear other than what I need for myself.
  • A few large-ish coolers. Keeping cold drinks (And cold food) on hand is always a good idea!

For those of you who are coffee drinkers - if anyone has a coffee pot and is willing to make sure there's always hot coffee available, that is ALWAYS a very appreciated gesture!

If anyone has tables and canopies (Or other structures to keep the rain / sun / wind off, if there is any), we'll want those.

Assorted Other Stuff That Might Be Useful:
  • 21' mobile tower w/ AR-33 rotator & about 8' of 1 1/2" mast
  • ATV with 3,000 pound winch: great for raising towers, etc.
  • Two ton come-along: not as good as the ATV & winch above
  • Big hurkin' 1-ton dually service truck - great for an anchor point, four-wheeled winch, mobile power source, or base for a mobile antenna tower!
  • 6' Step ladder
  • 8' Step ladder
  • Large fiberglass extension ladder (That I hardly like to use because I'm a chicken when it comes to heights)

With any luck, I'll have some sort of improvised mobile tower ready for Field Day - no promises, though.

Sounds like you have a lot of what I am missing and I may have stuff you could use. Cool! Power distrubution cords and coax are things I am short on and coffee pots and multiburner stoves, sunshade, table and camp chairs I have plenty of. I do have a family but they won't do more then visit if I am lucky so I have lots to share with my friends!

I've talked to the Grange manager and we can visit the site on any weekday evening. I suggest Wednesday, May 30th., at about 6:30 PM. We could rendezvous in Monmouth and then convoy to the Grange, or meet there. Let me know what you all think.
